See how spaces inside the printed area show the tee (like the inside of the circle)? A PNG format will allow transparent space – space that holds no color value for the pixel – to exist in a file. This design has no transparent space in it so that it can be printed as a jpeg. While JPEGs cannot save transparency like PNG’s, they allow many more compression options than pngs.

WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR: Square or rectangular images have no negative/transparent space and large file size. Photographs are almost always saved as jpeg.
